Debt consolidation is often used when people got credit card debt and they use the loan to pay of their credit cards, because credit cards got high interest rates. When you use your property (house) as collateral then u can negotiate a lower interest with the debt consolidation loan broker.
Many people are tempted with debt consolidation loans to consolidate unsecured loans with a secure loan (house). Although secured loan monthly repayments has got lower interest rates, but in the long term the total loan repaid amount might be higher. Debt consolidation only treats the symptoms of the money problem and not the root of the initial financial problem. As a result of this the person might go back in to debt and as a result back to square one. From personal experience with debt I will suggest that you rather stay away from debt consolidation loans. Cut up your credit cards and start paying of your smallest debt first and work your way up to the largest amount. Set yourself achievable short term targets and stay disciplined. You can do it.

The next step is to clear your smallest credit card first and work your way up.
What I did was on my budget spreadsheet I cleared all my other debt e.g. clothing accounts, loans etc. using my credit cards and then I started to focus on clearing my credit cards one by one.
Starting from the smallest credit card to the biggest.
A important step is to cut up the credit card that you are trying to clear and just make payments on it. Try to give beyond your minimum payment due.
Set yourself monthly goals and just stay focused on clearing your credit cards one by one.
If I can do it then you can do it also
* Draw up a budget with income and expenses
* Set yourself realistic goals
* Cut up the credit card that you want to clear
* Give payments more than the required minimum
